Over the last weeks in our Sunday Virtual Gathering Space via FaceBook and YouTube we have been exploring twelve of the Stations of the Cross as envisioned by artist Scott Erickson. His work is not only thought provoking but very well researched and nuanced with all sorts of wonderful metaphor and imagery. As our continued preparation for Easter and to assist us on walking thoughtfully and prayerfully using the “Stations” as our guide, there are several more of the Stations as imagined by Scott that we will be sharing here on a daily basis until Easter Sunday. Lean into reflection, and if you’re up for it, some further study on these Stations and see how the Holy Spirit just might awaken insight and encouragement for you in how seeing how Jesus walked in these final hours of his life so relates to not only how we journey and the path we’re on, but to reveal who we are and becoming, as we follow Him, by even “sharing in His sufferings that we may share in His glory.” (Romans 8:17)
Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
Jesus is compelled to desperate prayer. He says in Matthew 26:38, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Not only is His prayer desperate, but His need for companionship and solidarity is quite striking. He is honest in His need for God and for friends in this hour of trial. Reflect on where you need to lean into healthy desperation and surrender in your prayer life. Think about how others could be present with you in intercession and comradeship. How can you be available to others in their time of need both in prayer and presence?
